Minneapolis means “water city”, and accurately so. Minneapolis is home to 13 lakes, located on the Mississippi River, and abundant in wetlands, creeks, and waterfalls. Enjoy Minneapolis’s natural beauty outside, or visit one of their numerous museums to enjoy their art. The Minneapolis Institute of Art is a fine art museum displaying all kinds of art spanning 5,000 years of world history. The Walker Art Center was originally a private art collection that went public in 1940 and now has an annual attendance of around 700,000 visitors. Located nearby is the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden, an 11-acre park and one of the largest sculpture gardens in the country.
Looking for a little shopping? There’s no better place than the Mall of America, known to some simply as “the mall” for being the largest mall in the United States. Home to more 520 stores, and over 20 restaurants, not only can you shop and eat at the Mall of America, but you can also ride rollercoasters at Nickelodeon Universe, and see sharks at the Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium.
For a fun day with animals, you can also visit the Minnesota Zoo just outside of Minneapolis. The Minnesota Zoo was one of the first to arrange their exhibits by environment rather than animal species. As such, you can visit the zoo’s six environments to see their animals: native Minnesota animals, animals of the north, tropical animals, marine wildlife, animals from Russia’s Pacific coast, and farm animals.
